Great Calva - Lake District Walk
Sunday 12th September 2010
As we had an invite to my sisters for one of my mum's Sunday dinners a walk that cut down the journey to Calthwaite was one of the main considerations for selecting today's walk.
Start: Peter House Farm (NY 2491 3232)
Route: Peter House Farm - Cumbria Way - Great Calva (307) - Little Calva (308) - White Hause (309) - Brockle Crag - Peter House Farm
Distance: 8.25 miles Ascent: 614 metres Time Taken: 5 hours
Terrain: Generally good paths.
Weather: Warm but with a cold wind on the summit of Great Calva.
Pub Visited: None Ale Drunk: None
Looking across to White Hause and Little Calva from the Cumbria Way.
Heading up to Dash Falls.
Binsey as we approach the top of Dash Falls.
Skiddaw.
Little Calva from the climb to Great Calva.
Following the track to Great Calva.
Skiddaw was in and out of cloud for most of the day. Yes that is a roadwork's sign not far below the summit of Great Calva, health and safety gone mad in my opinion.
Great Calva's summit. Don't let the blue sky deceive you it was all layers on whilst we were up there as there was a bitter wind that didn't encourage us to linger there for long.
Blencathra from Great Calva.
Bowsacle Fell seen across the River Caldew.
Thirlmere in the distance, from Great Calva.
Layers off again now as we look back at Great Calva.
Little Calva's summit cairn.
Heading down to White Hause.
White Hause's summit with Burn Todd in the background.
Looking across towards Bassenthwaite. The quickest route back to the car is via the track below but as friends had found out the previous year the route to the track is blocked, making the options a long detour on a good track or a shorter detour on rough ground. We opted to do the longer trip on good tracks.
Our reward was this view across Trusmadoor to Meal Fell.
White Hause as we follow the track around the flanks of Great Cockup.
Skiddaw as we head towards the trudge along the road.
